Neurodivergent TV

Posted on 21 March 2026 by DJ-Daz
Have you been told that there’s a lot more autism now than ever before? Not true, we’re better at diagnosing people, and we are seeing themselves reflected in the media and are asking questions. They’re finally walking down the path to better understanding.

To be clear, these are TV shows and movies with neurodivergent characters or themes, even if not explicitly mentioned in the plot or the character. Some like House M.D. are subjective, I see Greg House as someone with high functioning Asperger’s syndrome. The Pitt features a doctor who is autistic and has a sister who is also on the spectrum. So while the show or movie isn’t about ASD specifically or a person on the spectrum, it will feature characters who are.

Thank you to Han Without Genes for a lot of input and an incredible website full of relevant information.

Trivias:
uncategorized: Series creator Hans Rosenfeldt never overtly referred to Saga's social awkwardness as a result of her being on the autism spectrum to the cast, including Sofia Helin, during pre-production. He did explain to Ms. Helin the particular behavioural traits he would like to see manifested in Saga, but "feared any labels bestowed on Saga's odd-behaviour would prevent the actors from relating to the character in an individual and authentic manner." "I did not want them to all rush off and learn a "textbook" approach to Asperger's syndrome or autism from the same source material". By not giving the cast and crew a label or category to understand Saga's odd-behaviour, "I hoped that each individual cast and crew member would have a more personal reaction to Saga's character traits and research accordingly".
uncategorized: Danes and Swedes do not always understand each other's languages as well as the series may have you believe. But the creators decided to ignore this fact for the sake of a fluent dialogue. Also when people enunciate their respective languages as well as television actors do, people in the Malmö/Copenhagen region usually do understand each other.

Trivias:
uncategorized: The five sided pins the lawyers wear on their left upper chest area is a symbol of the judiciary in Korea and indicates they are members of the legal profession. The red sashes worn by some of the lawyers indicates they serve the government as prosecutors.
uncategorized: Several locations from the show have become popular tourist spots in Korea. These include the restaurant Woo Young Woo's father owns, which is actually a real Japanese food restaurant. Also, the entrance to the building where Woo Young Woo works has become a popular place for people to try entering the revolving doors like Woo Young Woo does on the show.
uncategorized: Lawyer Woo Young Woo displays common traits in many autistic people, including an aversion to being touched, finding it painful to look people in the eye, a deep passion for one topic (also referred to as a 'special interest' in the autism community), in her case whales. Other common traits she shows are immediate echolalia (the practice of repeating what others say, used for a variety of reasons) and a need to organize items into neat rows and piles - since autistic people take in a huge amount of sensory information compared to allistic people, organizing what they can helps soothe them. She has savant abilities, which is portrayed often in media but is actually uncommon in autistic people - only about 10% according to most research. For Woo Young Woo, this manifests in an incredible memory, excellent pattern recognition, and the ability to recall things read a long time ago.
Runtime:75 minutes
Plot: Follows the brilliant attorney Woo Young-woo, who tackles challenges in and out of the courtroom as a rookie at a prominent law firm and a woman on the autism spectrum.
